Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Athletes will gain the option to contest specific decisions made by the official, echoing the system already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move follows just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
