The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Ever

The buzz surrounding The Game Awards reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer featuring striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team might be designing a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it kicked off the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—traits that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths only possible with a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Most missions can be approached in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
