Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.

No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
