RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels providing entry to the site... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among numerous British personnel deployed over the festive period. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
