Approximately fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.

Cars, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a official communication.

Officers say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued substance.

The fluid had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they stated.

Officers then discovered multiple other marked automobiles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police report early analysis show the substance was likely human blood.

"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; authorities are not yet informed of any injuries in association with the event," they added.

City officials said they were working "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the community for information.

A senior political figure said the incident left him stunned and needed to be resolved quickly.

"This act hits the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the death of nine victims by a shooter aiming at residents of migrant background in five years prior.
